Relief for Sciatica: Unburden Your Nerves

Dealing with sciatica for any length of time is often a proverbial ‘pain in the butt’. Left untreated, it generally worsens and can feel like a hot poker in the buttocks or the back of the leg. True sciatica is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve along its path from the spine to the foot. This compression can be caused by disc bulges or arthritic changes but, more often than not, can be a combination of joint restrictions and/or misalignment of the spine and pelvis coupled with muscle tension throughout the buttocks and lower back.

These issues are often easily addressed and relief can be seen over a small number of treatments in many cases.

To help you with your sciatica pain, we may use techniques such as soft-tissue manipulation and myofascial releases (similar to remedial massage), dry needling (assessed as an option case by case), balancing of ligamentous tension (gentle joint releasing techniques), muscle energy techniques as well as various joint manipulation techniques, depending on your needs, wishes and comfort levels with the techniques.

Generally, if the pain has lasted more than 3 days, it’s worth discussing it with your preferred health care practitioner.

Note: The paramount concern in sciatica is safeguarding your nerves. While uncommon, in severe cases, it can be necessary to order scans (X-rays, ultrasound, MRI) before commencing treatment.
